There was one of the popular girls named Kalyani Misra AKA Kali M for short (or for her hobby-turned-job).
At best I was ignored by her. At worst, I was talked down to.
“Get out of my way, freak!” She’d say to me if I happened to be in her presence with her girl posse and adoring fans.
I didn’t bother answering her. Some people thought we looked like cousins, but I disagreed. I know there’s some connection with our respective ethnicities, but most people who were like me were from Europe instead of a certain part of Asia.
While I wasn’t popular like her, I did have some teachers willing to support me.
