Let’s talk a little about Piteraq Dusk.
This novelette was first written in July 2015. Piteraq Dusk was also my first novelette I ever wrote as I competed in Camp NaNoWriMo that year and beat that challenge. Truth be told, most of the books I’ve written so far are one to four years old, but I never published them until now.
I wanted to try something different with the -punk suffix. Sure, there’s steampunk, cyberpunk, oceanpunk, etc. An idea came up with a frozen landscape in the distant future, so I decided to write a short book utilizing that concept. Since I also have a thing for diverse protagonists, I wanted to have a biracial character who could be in that environment, so I made Jaroslav into someone of mixed Aleutian and Slovakian descent. It’s certainly a mix I’ve never seen before in fiction, so I wanted to do something different in that way. I looked up various kinds of snow and ice online and stumbled upon the word piteraq. It’s actually a frigid wind that occurs in Greenland and it translates into “that which attacks you” in one of the Greenlandic languages. Also, several characters and locales reference frigid things.
Hoped you enjoyed my little explanation on my inspiration for Piteraq Dusk.
Reblogged this on Ospreyshire's Realm and commented:
